Family Seder Pesah at the restaurantFamily Seder Pesah of the Nikitskaya Jewish Cultural Center at the restaurant "Shafran" - those who happened to be at the restaurant "Shafran" on April 2 will keep the good spirits and pleasant memories connected to this Passover evening for a long time... |

 |
      |

 |
The festive atmosphere of the cozy restaurant "Shafran" was inimitable.
The word "seder" means "order". It is a meal, conducted by the special rules, followed by the prayers and chants. And this is just the way the Seder was conducted this time. A well-known reformist rabbi Nelly Shulman has gorgeously introduced the guests to the world of Passover Haggada and brightly described the laws and traditions of Pesah. And Moscow Male Jewish Chapel directed by Alexander Tsalyuk masterfully performed traditional Passover chants.
Merry hunt for afikoman was conducted in all-time shortest record this time. That surprised the hostess of Seder, rabbi Nelly Shulman ineffably. Therefore, the Passover meal was not delayed this time. Savoury Passover courses and beverages were presented in plenty.
During the meal the guests were entertained by the very interesting program, in which famous Russian actors and pop singers took part. Charming Klara Novikova was performing the part of her famous Aunty Sonya. Unforgettable Atos from "The three musketeers", unsurpassed Voland from "Master and Margarita" Veniamin Smekhov elated everyone by reading several fables by Nikolay Erdman. The guests of the Seder enjoyed famous Israeli songs performed by the excellent singer Alla Rid. And the self-perpetuating leader of the pop ensemble "Bravo", unsurpassed master, composer, author of the songs Evgeny Khavtan song his most famous songs.
Leonid Kanevsky, everyone's favourite, major Tomin from "Sledstvie vedut znatoki" was the host of the concert program. Even the most serious people were moved to laughter by Kanevsky's anecdote contest. Anecdotes were in plenty, but alas, there was only one winner of the contest. The guest of the Seder was awarded the bottle of kosher Israeli wine and festive skullcap for an anecdote about the contemporary politicians.
And at the same time children who were also guests of the Seder set forth to Egypt on a spaceship, but were caught on their way by the pirates headed by the Egyptian Pharaoh. Kids had to go through all of the trials that the Jews had to go through, they were made slaves and took part in the building of the pyramids. Children showed their worth as true heroes. By their common effort they defeated the Pharaoh, freed themselves from slavery and managed to reach the promised land.
Those who happened to be at the restaurant "Shafran" on April 2 will keep the good spirits and pleasant memories connected to this Passover evening for a long time.

 |
On June 3 all the friends of JCC - children and heir parents, young and grown-up, studio students and pupils, teachers and pedagogues - gathered in the warmly welcoming concert hall, just opened after the renovation.
At the foyer the guests were greeted by presentations of JCC's studios and programs, photo-reports of the merry holidays Hanukkah, Purim and Pesah, an exhibition of hand-made articles from clay made by the students of Ceramics studio, film about the unique project of the center - children's developing center "Tapuz". And also one could get acquainted with the Faculty of Hebrew Studies, where children not only study the Jewish tradition, but also prepare for entrance exams to the School of Hebrew Studies of Institute of Asian and African Studies of Moscow State University.
Studio students of JCC performed at the bright, festive, merry and sunny with smiles graduation concert. Two merry pirates were the hosts of this concert and the stage reminded us about the summer vacation which is to come - palm-trees, sea and dolphins.
The guys from the popular dance studio "ONI" opened the concert. After that the students of the Children Drama School "DASH" performed several sketches. Children vocal pop ensemble "More solntsa" presented guests with a couple of outstanding variety turns.
But what is a concert without songs? JCC students sang in Russian, English and Hebrew! And the spectators sang together with pupils of Orange English School ABC, and young people from Hebrew Club, and the youngest students of JCC – kids from the children center “Tapuz”. On this joyful day new friends visited JCC: this was Moscow Jewish Children Choir.
After the concert everyone was treated to snacks and drinks, and the smartest and bravest took part in the chess competition, organized by Alexander Kartashov, head of the studio “Chess”.
No one wanted to leave and part with their friends, therefore many people will be going with this friendly and merry company – children, parents and pedagogues – to the summer family camp “Jerusalem Fairy-Tale” on the Black Sea coast in July. |

While escaping from Nazis during WWII, a Jewish man buries two suitcases full of things dear to his heart in the ground. The war deprived him of his family, and afterwards he endlessly turns over the soil of Antwerp to find the suitcases, an obsessive compulsion. He keeps checking old maps and keeps digging, trying to find what he lost. His daughter Chaya is a beautiful modern girl looking for a part-time job. She finds a place as a nanny in the strictly observant hassidic family with many children, although her secular manners clearly fly in the face of their beliefs. One of the reasons she is accepted is that mother of the family is absolutely overburdened by the household, so Chaya stays despite the resistance of the father, who is normally an indisputable authority in the family.
She develops a special bond with the youngest of the boys, four-year old Simcha, who seems incapable of speaking. She encourages him to speak while walking in the park, and it appears that, after some coaching from Chaya (who needs coaching herself) during the upcoming Passover Seder, Simcha will be able to chant the section of the Haggadah usually reserved for the youngest speaking participant - the Four Questions.
At first, Simcha's nerves prevent him from chanting, and his brothers begin to chant instead. Simcha finally lifts his voice. The entire family, including Chaya, applauds his efforts, but his judgemental father does not recognize this great step, but instead criticizes the boy for a mistake. Chaya confronts the father, and in the process, discovers his own pain as a Holocaust survivor, and begins to understand her own parents' grief.
The anti-Semitic superintendent of the building is a constant problem for the entire family and now for Chaya. However, as opposed to the observant Jews, she refuses to be a victim and does not put up with his anti-Semitic tricks. She fights him, thus exciting the children's admiration and father's wrath.
Unfortunately, walks with Simcha end in a tragedy: after sneaking to the park, he drowns in the pond, while chasing the ducks he loved so much. Some in the community hold Chaya responsible for his death. However, in a scene where Chaya goes to the family's mourning service, the mother feels compassion for Chaya and realizes that Chaya felt a deep connection with Simcha. As an act of acceptance, his mother rips Chaya's shirt, which is a sign of a mourner (a sibling, parent, child or spouse of the deceased) in Jewish tradition.
The boy's father finally, albeit silently, acknowledges Chaya's connection with Simcha when she observes the graveside service.
Chaya's experience allows her to finally accept her parents' past, and to embrace her own Jewishness. The film is a commentary not only on external (gentile) anti-Semitism, but also on the lack of connection and self-acceptance of assimilated Jews.

video Global Day of Jewish Learning«Things dreamt of in our philosophy» There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy. HamletDevoted to the translation of Babylonian Talmud made by rabbi Adin Steinsaltz. «For someone else’s and one’s own, the greatest and the least, extinct from the memory of any history, is kept peacefully pending its revival…» (Talmud. Emanuel Deytesh, British Library, London, 1867.) "If Torah is the foundation of Judaism, then Talmud is the centre column which holds its spiritual and philosophic arch." Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz «Simple meanings are renewed every day» - repeats Rashbam, medieval Tosafist, after his famous grandfather, Rashi. Perhaps, this could be applied to translations: each generation re-translates ancient texts into languages comprehensible for the current readers .Translation of Talmud into Hebrew and Russian is a Cyclopean labour and a spiritual exploit. Our aim is to tell you about this phenomenon of the human thought from the point of view of the modern man distant from the traditional interpretation of his own heritage. In this case more conceivable and habitual forms of art and communication, such as theatre, music, cinema and lectures, combined with traditional Beit Midrash format, could be of great help. Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz says that the true understanding of Talmud can be achieved only through spiritual merging with the text, through drawing it into discussion ,both on emotional and intellectual level, through turning, in a way, into one of its creators. This idea inspired us in making this program Decoration:-Exhibition of Russian-language Talmud editions and books by rabbi Steinsaltz -Installation of Haim Sokol, artist and Beit Midrash teacher. Schedule:12.30-13.00 (assembly hall) - opening. Greetings from Steinsaltz Institute. 13.00-14.30 (assembly hall) – calligraphy workshop by the artist-calligraphist, expert on Jewish sacral texts Abraham Borshchevsky (Israel). 15.00 – 16.30 (assembly hall ) –screening of the film by Henri Salfati «Talmud» & discussion moderated by the journalist and specialist in religious studies Yuriy Tabak 16.40 – 17.50 (gallery) – lecture by PhD Leonid Matsikh «Jewish classical texts: museum or library». 18.00 – 19.20 (animation studio & gallery) – beit midrash «Mistorin», 2 groups: 1."Birth, love to mother, searching for father G-d and his people relationship"- artistic discussion based on Talmudic texts which inspired the performance «Khalomot Moshe» (Moses’ dreams) moderated by Julia Ginis, the theatre director of “Mistorin”(Israel) 2."Amram’s decision is more severe then Pharaoh’s laws (Sot’s treaty) – Moses’ birth and his “sacred family". Beit Midrash through studying Talmudic texts connected with the performance «Khalomot Moshe» (Moses’ dreams) moderated by Yaakov Sinichkin, teacher and interpreter of talmudic texts. (Israel) 19.30 – 20.30 (assembly hall) - performance «Khalomot Moshe» by theatre “Mistorin” (Israel). 21.30 – 23.00 (assembly hall) – «Wanderings by Sanhedrim. From Yavne to Tiberias». Ticket price: 400 rubles. For students and retirees 50% discount. "Face-to-face talk with silence" This film-play was created on the basis of the poem "Gorbunov and Gorchakov" by Josef Brodskiy. The years spent in writing this work were the hardest in the life of the poet. The life circumstances which laid in the basis of the poem "Gorbunov and Gorchakov" were Brodskiy’s two visits to the insane hospital for checking-up. He turned his most dreadful experience into a fiction text and the arguing voices inside him into the characters of the text. The poetic mystery "Face-to-face talk with silence" is called in this way because for Brodskiy “death is silence and life is dialogue”. The eternally challengeable topic of loneliness in front of life and death and desperate search for a talker – this is exactly the thing as Brodskiy considers that gives birth to moral basement and reliance and "courage to live". |
